Since we can't seem to avoid the virus, positive cases, which will result in deaths, would seem to be the only way to reach herd immunity. Short of a vaccine arriving soon, that is.
According to the US Census Bureau, current US population is 330 million. 150,000 deaths, while obviously way higher than anyone would like (and to be fair, an entirely unreliable number; it could be less, or more) represents a 0.045% chance of dying.
Maybe, just maybe, this notion that we need to roll up into the fetal position, destroy our economy, do untold harm to our children by keeping them out of school, destroy peoples' livelihoods, postpone medical treatment for things like cancer, diabetes, etc., suffer skyrocketing suicide rates, just to deal with a virus pandemic is not the way to go.
We've never done it before during a pandemic, so maybe it's us that has changed, not the danger from a pandemic.
