Indeed: These ads come across as “funny,” even today. I’m sure anti-suffragettes thought they were a scream at the time. But it was ridicule in the service of a terrible cause. That’s how propaganda becomes brutally effective. You either join in, or... “What? You missed the joke? Whoosh!”
That’s why I’m not all that impressed with the defense of certain political memes on this site: “it was just a joke!!”
If it’s a “joke” about someone’s identity, particularly at the expense of groups in society who are lacking rights and social standing due to our own failure to properly govern, then I’m not laughing.
If it’s good-natured humor, or “punching up” at the President or other elected officials, then I might.
This goes equally for jokes at the expense of Trump supporters: I’m not a big fan of left-wing memes that portray them as rednecks missing teeth, etc.
