So after doing a lot of digging into crime stats, this is what I found (so far)
Arrest to fatality percentages by ethnicity:
(2016) Number of black arrests per year : 2,263,112 (2017) Number of fatalities via cop: 223 = 0.01%
(2016) Number of white arrests per year : 5,858,330 (2017) Number of fatalities via cop: 457 = 0.008%
Discrepancy of 0.002% in arrests>fatalities between black and white arrests (by percentage)
Charges to Prison population percentage by ethnicity:
(2016) Number of black arrests and convictions: Approximately 2,200,000 (2020) Incarceration percent : 38%
(2016) Number of white arrests and convictions: Approximately 5,800,000 (2020) Incarceration percent : 58%
So this is a potential discrepancy where Black men may be over incarcerated (percentage based) ..
However when we take the top 5 highest form of crime via FBI crime data stats (murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary)
Black arrests : 39.72% avg between all 5, percentage based Incarceration rate : 38%
White arrests : 57.38% avg between all 5, percentage based Incarceration rate : 58%
Meaning that Black men may be under incarcerated (theoretically)
So obviously there is alot of undetermined context to each situation (ethnicity of cop, circumstance surround death, level of burglary, 3 strike rule etc etc) so we can't say to what extent arrests/sentencing is racially motivated.
What we CAN say is that, purely based on number of arrests, types of crimes and potential causes for incarceration, there doesn't appear to be any significant evidence of institutionalised racism within the police force or legal system overall.
