Yeah, I've found that most conservatives have trouble imagining things being different than RIGHT NOW.
So, for them Democrats of old are exactly like Democrats today. And if you asked them how someone got from Washington DC to San Francisco in 1919, they'd say that they drove.
And, yeah, they did, but it took the Army to send a convoy of 80 trucks for men and supplies. It took them 62 days to make it.
They averaged a pace of 6 miles an hour. It took them all day to go from Washington DC to Frederick, Maryland. Today, that is about an hour drive (without rushhour traffic).
Now, keep in mind, that blistering pace was on the maintained roads and the "highway" system.
they kept that pace up until they got to Nebraska.
And shit slowed way down.
Then it got worse in Utah. There were some days they were able to speed along at 200 yards.
For the day.
Even in the states between DC and Nebraska, they had to rebuild bridges to be able to handle the weight of 1 truck or find a way around them.
