It's called "presentism." It's the uncritical adherence to present-day attitudes, especially the tendency to interpret past events in terms of modern values and concepts. It's also ignorant.
What if I told you taking history out of the context of it's times and applying a 21st century standard to those people is the pinnacle of ignorance? Setting that standard now will make your brilliant actions today look really, really stupid in the 22nd century. Oh wait, your actions today are really, really stupid.
