Truth be told, I have never owned or flown a Confederate flag but I respect history and hate to see it abused because people are to lazy to view it from the perspective of the people that lived during those times. The attempt to shame southerners is racist, calling them traitors and other such nonsense would be the same as someone making the claim that the last time blacks were happy was when they where slaves, no riots, protests or activist groups of any size. They were all happy except for a few traitorous ones that were kidnapped by an activist group known as the underground railroad. It is really that easy to bend history to fit political agendas. That is the real issue here. Censorship in any form is hate speech, no one has the right to tell others that they can not honor their history or how to feel about it.
The real truth is much more complex, people were drafted, forced and paid to fight (on both sides), the average white male was no more educated than the black soldiers that fought on both sides. I have met black families that honored their Confederate soldiers, I can respect that. The people in the day saw them as rebels and not a one lost their US citizenship, they were American soldiers and I can respect that. I have to admit that I was shocked the first time I saw a group of black men flying what some consider a Confederate battle flag but I could tell they were not fooling, they were proud to be southern men, I can respect that.
