Trump retweeted these nonsensical and apparently made-up crime statistics. Check the FBI for real information. | image tagged in fake news, crime, statistics, trump tweeting, trump tweet, trump twitter | made w/ Imgflip meme maker
Not sure where you got the #1 line item above, but if you read the actual article, it comes from this silly meme retweeted by the President. Turns out the numbers are just flat wrong and the source doesn’t exist.

According to FBI statistics, whites are most likely to kill other whites and blacks are most likely to kill other blacks.

Which makes sense, because our country is very segregated, which increases the likelihood that if you were to murder any random person you encountered, it would be someone of your own race.

The point isn't what Trump said, which seems wrong to me, but the excuse they give for calling him a liar, even while saying he's correct.

Same author, same exact topic, same exact clothing, one week apart, yet two totally different takes based only on the political affiliation of the two subjects.

Congrats: A confirmed case of TDS caught in the wild!

Ding ding ding we have a winner

Caveat: Strip away the dumb fashion tie-in, and pretty much everything she says about Trump’s platform has, as a substantive matter, been proven correct.

So: With the benefit of hindsight, I wish I had listened to such drivel at the time and voted accordingly.

Well, golly gee, a partial admittance of truth, yet splashed with a dash of TDS. I'll take what I can get, I suppose. Really tho, can we not get on the page that media sucks now? Fox and the rest of them. Mostly clickbaity garbage.
1 up, 4y
Indeed, there is a lot of bias, clickbait, and garbage out there. And yet: we have to get our news from somewhere, or else we will be uninformed sheeple.

The best solution I have found is reading widely, especially from the sources in the center cluster, and applying your own critical reasoning, judgment, and common sense to everything you encounter.

This demands a lot of focus and intelligence, but there are no easy answers to these epistemological problems, I’m afraid.

If you think of a better solution, let me know.

The photo on the right purports to illustrate the concept of hundreds of people dying, and isn’t captioned.

The photo on the left actually illustrates the concept of hundreds of people dying, and is captioned.

Why did the article on the right select that photo? Well: I can think of several good reasons why it would be difficult to find the coffins of hundreds of Covid deaths neatly lined up in rows like that, as opposed to the victims of one discrete shipwreck.

Starting with the fact that these hundreds of deaths occurred across ALL OF ITALY.

Personally, I find that the image on the right is entirely appropriate for purposes of conveying the gravity of the situation.

Not to beat a dead horse (j/k, I love beating dead horses):

The article on the right isn't from "CNN." It's from an Entertainment-oriented website called kanyidaily.com. Looks like they have since changed out the image, too.

https://www.kanyidaily.com/2020/03/italy-record-highest-death-of-coronavirus-as-627-persons-dies-in-a-single-day.html

Another memer pointed this out for me today.

Kanyidaily fake news is ruining America!!!!

They still should have captioned it as it is very misleading. But fair point it being mainly a fringe site.

And my comment was refering to the meme i posted above it.

At least the media sources that have a commitment to reality and a willingness to be fact-checked admit their errors when pointed out.
1 up, 4y,
1 reply
No, not really. They run salacious fake news to get clicks and views, then they run a retraction that gets half the views or at the back of the paper.

But yes, many right website do run crap too, but they aren't 'respected' like the yobs at NYT or WA Post. I've seen alot more retraction from those two then Fox News.
1 up, 4y,
1 reply
I find that the willingness to run retractions is a mark of credibility.

It is simply not possible to get 100% of the news stories 100% right 100% of the time. The philosophical commitment to truth is more important.

Thanks for chatting.

And that's why you'll never be a court room lawyer. An assumption isn't proof. CNN is as disingenuous as you are so of course you'd defend it.

INTEL ANALYSIS *SHOWS* PUTIN APPROVED ELECTION HACKING

BUT NEITHER SOURCE SAID THEY KNEW OF SPECIFIC INTEL THAT DIRECTLY TIES PUTIN TO THE ATTACK

Die on your CNN hill, you disingenuous shill.
1 up, 4y,
1 reply
I think you’re not giving enough credence to the word “analysis” and what it means in the context of peering inside a gangster regime like Russia, where speaking up against the regime or leaking highly classified intel could get your mouth shut for good.
0 ups, 4y,
1 reply
Not really.

Had they headlined it as:

'Intel SUGGESTS Putin approved election hacking'

That would be one thing. This is done for people who just skim headlines.

And too your other point, ALL the mistakes go in ONE direction. Always. So that excuse has zero credibility. These aren't all honest mistakes. It's conditioning.
1 up, 4y
Oh boo boo, they used a verb you didn’t like. I find this to be a complaint about semantics not substance.

It flies in the face of everything we know about Russia that Putin himself didn’t approve this.

And anyway, Trump and the media outlets that shill for him have gone so off the deep end that they are essentially engaged in an exercise of constructing their own alternative reality.

If you want to raise complaints about accuracy in media, start there.

What am I talking about specifically? Well: Let’s start with “Obamagate,” a hamfisted pseudojudicial attempt at rewriting past history and electioneering concerning alleged conduct from 3.5 years ago, ramping up just months before an upcoming Presidential election.

I know you’ll disagree, but well, too bad.

The hilarious part is all this really does is set a precedent for investigating and prosecuting Trump and his cronies once they leave office and their sweeping and spurious claims of “executive privilege” fall away. Trump had better make himself a big long pardon list and check it twice.

And will he put himself at the top of that pardon list as he’s claimed he has the right to do? We’ll see!

A better and much more obviously constitutional move would be to resign 5 minutes before his term is up and let Pence do it for him.

Wikileaks has not been proven false by a single thing they released, so that's your baseless opinion.

It means actually working with the DNC to push DNC propaganda. You might be too young to remember when the media was even slightly bipartisan but I do.

Fewer corps own more media outlets then ever before. It's now all group think.

When the right-wing went crazy about this a couple months ago, I asked them to consider the possibility that HIPAA laws in this country prevent news crews from just walking into a hospital, pointing cameras, and shooting.

Or any of a number of other innocent explanations for this screw-up. Which the network admitted, by the way.

I watched the footage. It showed nothing important.

In reality, New York’s outbreak of Covid was at least as bad as Italy’s so even if the theory is that this footage was part of some elaborate hoax to scare Americans, this is still all much ado about nothing.
1 up, 4y
The issue is in Wikileaks’ selectivity. This article does a good take-down. https://thisinterestsme.com/wikileaks-bias/

This episode involving the Panama Papers was... interesting.

When you’ve got one of the world’s most powerful and cynical dictators citing you with approval, something is wrong in Denmark.

Wikileaks is not really interested in speaking truth to power anymore. If they ever were.

Paid family leave is a complex topic, and both articles raise valid points.

But broadly speaking, the Democratic Party favors it and isn’t going to shoot it down.

With what? I provided plenty examples of leftwing media lying and colluding. There's a reason people don't trust the media anymore.
0 ups, 4y
I don’t think your examples really show that for all the reasons I stated.

If you disagree: well, I refer you to the meme above.

And ask you to consider the possibility that right-wing media does the same exact shit.
