It's not even that deep. Back in 2016 when he was trying to secure the nomination, a bunch of Republican senators publicly withheld their support of him until he published a shortlist of Supreme Court possible picks with their relatives on it; suddenly they were on his side in time for the convention. No connecting the dots required - this was all surface-level public eye shenanigans.
