Stand: Basically Pokemon but based off of humans and can throw knives. People who have them are stand users. Non stand users can't see stands except for when they do. Damage on a stand reflects on it's user. Stands can be inherited. That's the jist of it

So what has that got to do with them dying quickly?

( Spoiler for part three )Avdol is a character with a really strong stand. He's one of the first people to die in part three. Characters woth weaker stands seem to live longer in the show for whatever reason.
