Cars kill more people per year: Why don't you favor banning cars.

True story, this has come up in conversation both online and among friends. It really doesn't work. Especially since I'm actually not a fan of cars. le gasp! Mother died in a car accident, Grandmother died in a car accident, Father survived a car accident but was in a coma for years. Needless to say, not a fan of cars. I bike. It is honestly how I keep fit.

Yeah, liberals do consistently favor expanding safer public transit options like buses and rail. And eco-friendly private options like biking.

But no: no one favors outright banning cars. It can’t be done, they’re way too useful. We live with the risk because of the benefits.

A virus ravaging society provides no benefits and significant costs.

I didn't even have space to add what might be my favorite Trumpist excuse of all: "It's not the government's job to keep people safe." Nevermind the fact many of these other excuses implicitly contradict that.

That excuse simultaneously excuses Trump's (mis)conduct, whatever it was, and turns the blame on Democrats lifting so much as a finger to help.

It's as effective on Righties as it is cynical, disgusting, and detached from reality.
