Other countries have gotten their responses together so much better than we did. For instance: I read this morning that South Korea reported a “spike” in cases and was shocked when I read that what they considered a “spike” was something like 30 new cases:

All I’m asking is for the President to do his job. If the China travel ban of Jan. 31 had worked, then Democrats (who labeled it racist and xenophobic) would be eating crow right now.

And so Trump and his supporters now bear responsibility for pretending for weeks that that one ban fixed the problem.

Same thing with immigration bans. It’s just chum for Trump’s base at this point, since we’re now the world epicenter of Covid-19 and therefore any new arrivals to our country should be more scared of us than we are of them.

None of this was inevitable. This is simply a complete and unmitigated disaster and blame starts at the top.

South Korea did the most testing early on and they found the death rate was super low, comparable to the yearly flu. South Korea also locks people in their homes China style. They will have a massive surge of cases the moment they open back up, but you've been told this before.

Same for Vietnam, massive rights violations that would not be tolerated in the US

The President is doing his job. He's listening to the 'experts' and making decisions based on what they tell him. Unfortunately they are giving him bad advice and trying to blow up the issue. Of course turns out Fauci was the one that caused it in the first place, but you've been told this many times.

Trump and his supporters hold no blame. The World Health Organization said it was not communicable, Fauci said not to worry, other experts chimed in and said it would go away quickly, but you've been told this already and shown links that prove it.

Immigration bans would actually help stop the devastation of the economy caused by the covid-19 response. It might also help curb the spread of covid-19.

All of this was inevitable because quarantine is literally the only thing that will stop a very infectious virus like this, but that wouldn't work in the US because people live paycheck to paycheck and it would need to include 'essential' workers as well as everyone else.

Just early widespread testing, aggressive tracking and tracing, competent leadership, and a cooperative populace that is neither conspiracy-minded nor scientifically illiterate.

Are they destined to end up as bad as we are now? Only time will tell. But for now, they are kicking our asses six ways to Sunday in their response.

Trump and his supporters shoulder plenty of blame and are the primary reason the legitimate and reasonable safety measures that you describe as “massive human rights violations” would “not be tolerated in the U.S.”

If Fauci downplayed the virus early on, then he shares blame, too. Since then, he’s been on the ball and considerably more aggressive than Trump. Did Fauci really not see it coming or did he do this in a misguided effort to please his boss? Historians will be asking these questions for decades to come.

If Trump were otherwise generally competent and an inspiring leader then I could see the effort to turn Fauci into a fall guy succeeding, but as it stands, I just see the entire administration floundering.

The general principle holds: Where does the buck stop? Presidents used to know.
