I stand corrected on the number. So, only a thousand of Americas brightest young military minds will be unnecessarily exposed to the families, airplane passangers, people in terminals, taxis and their drivers and others who could infect them and their classmattes, bringing Covid 19 to West Point.
As for "the state of the pandemic," I found the following information in the AMA Newsletter, "Summer weather may bring some slight relief from the COVID-19 pandemic, predicts a prominent Yale physician researcher famed for his use of quantitative methods. But unlike earlier pandemics, sunshine will not bake away the disease. And look out for a powerful second wave by fall.
This is according to Nicholas A. Christakis MD, PhD, MPH, who is the Sterling Professor of Social and Natural Science, Internal Medicine and Biomedical Engineering and directs the Human Nature Lab at Yale University. "
That powerful second wave will start as people let down their guards in early Summer, if history is any indicator.
The disease will still be here and will still be as virulent. Even though the numbers may be down, it would not be a great time for such risky behavior, just so the president can give a speech. If people who care about the health and safety of West Point Cadets make noise, the speech could be cancelled, again. The fact that it was re-scheduled shows that US policy is not based on what is good for all citizens, but on what opportunities for personal publicity the president can wring out of every possible occasion.
