The problem is they coordinate over a large scale, so it takes a while for word to circulate that a particular line of argument was ineffective - but I've seen it happen, when they do drop hair-brained arguments that they thought was really going to work. They'll never say "oh, snap, you got me!" of course, but it does get quietly dropped from their repertoire.
