Minimum wage jobs are a starting point for unskilled youth or people in the service industry that get tips which the Democrats pushed to tax said tips, minimum wage jobs aren't intended to be a career.

Minimum wage in Canada is between $12-$15/hr. Last time I made $7hr was 1990, starting wage pushing a broom currently for a company I sub off is $18/hr. It's not just entry level jobs either. Some people can only have service industry jobs, working the tills, stock, food services etc. Take a look at some of the people working in malls, gas stations etc, not all kids or students, what about during school hrs? Who do you think works in those malls, big box stores and service jobs? It's not ideal, but that's all some can do, and whom do you think explouts that?

It's more complicated than the current public debate acknowledges. It used to be that a single wage earner could support a family completely, but now that is very difficult for most families.
Wages tracked with GDP until about 1970 and that's when wages began to stagnate. Among the reasons for this (I'm sure there are other reasons as well) the workforce nearly doubled as more women joined the workforce, this added a downward pressure on wages because more people were competing for jobs and employers could hire workers for less pay. Adding illegal workers to the mix, only adds more downward pressure and makes the problem worse. Employers will pay employees more, only when employees become scarce.
