Actually, Goku did that so the planet could be safe from Cell's explosion. Sure, Super Saiyan 2 turned his firstborn into a psychopath (which all started because of that one Senzu Bean), but Goku realized his mistake and sacrificed himself for his friends and family.
Sure Cell came back, but my point still stands.
