Yeah, I'm not buying it, just as I never bought him being a lawyer. It was too obvious he wasn't since he seemed to have all the time in the world to post memes. Either he was a piss-poor lawyer who never got any work, or he was a liar. Now this is just more "look at me guys, I want to be a troll" bullshit. Trolls rarely ever admit they're a troll and if they do it's just to get more attention.

I would agree it is more likely that the whole 'paid troll' story was merely an attempt to gain attention (which is the aim of all internet trolls).
