Seriously -- a few days ago I tweeted CNN about that. The Census is used to determine how many congressional representatives each state gets, where funds will go, etc.
I've done genealogy as a hobby for years, so I've seen a lot of census records. I did my on-line Census yesterday and I was quite surprised how little they asked--name, address, gender, ethnicity, birthdate, own/rent home, people staying there. Nothing about occupation, education level, marital status, household income, birth state or nation.
