I'M NOT MUCH OF A SCIENTIST OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT, BUT CAN RAIN WASH AWAY AIRBORNE GERMS AND VIRUSES? I'VE HEARD SNOW HAS AIR-CLEANSING CAPABILITIES, AND RAIN WASHES POLLEN AWAY RATHER NICELY. I'M BASICALLY ASKING BECAUSE IT'S RECENTLY RAINED WHERE I LIVE. | made w/ Imgflip meme maker

Hi NonDescript

The notion of viruses being airborne is a bit of a myth. To be sure, it can be inhaled but it's not as light as a mist. When you cough or sneeze dropplets spray fourth which is naturally heavier than a vapor.

When it comes to the Corona virus, I doubt rain will help. In a direct approach of this, you should think that rain washes everything away, and falling water also causes suction, so it's not unthinkable some viruses will wash away.

But, rain also causes moisture in the air, and that is precisely what the corona virus needs to survive outside somebody's body. I do not know if the virus can move up in the air, or be lifted by water vapor, but if so, rain can work counterproductive.

So basically there are two theories about this. Most flu variants and corona variants appear not to be able to live long in dry areas, which could explain why most African countries have very little to no infections at all.

Even if it didn’t rain, I highly doubt you would have to worry about catching coronavirus from outdoor air as long as you stay away from people. Even airborne diseases don’t travel very far from the host body. For example, if I were to take a road trip across the US, and not interact with people, I’m most likely not going to get infected. So don’t be afraid to go outside, just keep a good distance from other people.

Oh, I'm not afraid to go outside (I'm doing my darndest to stay in), I was just pretty curious.

The official advice is 1.50m to stay away... if possible.... However, when people don't face you, they can't infect you unless they touch you, skin-to-skin... when clothes are between you and that other person infection by touch can't happen. You just have to avoid them breathing in your face.... Especially coughing.... And direct skin contact... if neither happens, infection is unlikely to happen...

Like Olympian said... viruses do often not travel very far.
