Good point. Upvote. However, maybe it's that I have a little bit of a bleeding heart, but for many kids that lunch is the only real meal they have 5 times a week.

I get it. Nobody wants children to go hungry, especially in a country as advanced as ours. Even more important however is the fact that we founded our country with a limited government. Nobody envisioned our government with absorbing the responsibility of replacing the roles of parents, and the minute we begin to rely on the government to do such things we commit ourselves to traveling on a path that leads to permanent dependence on government.

You are, of course, correct. It's just sad that kids are not taken care of by those who are responsible for them being here in the first place. I do believe in personal responsibility. Just sad as a humanitarian that it has come to this.

Our frame of reference is skewed by the among other things, our current technological advancements, and this leads us to believe one of two, or both of the following misconceptions: 1) this is a new phenomenon facing society and at no other point in history have children had bad parents or 2) we are should be so advanced as a society to overcome the shortfalls of all parents.

Both are false, and that doesn't change the pain we feel for the children. But that last thing we should want to do is enable more people to be bad parents.

Schools and importantly universities and colleges are a well known vector of transmission, kids can still get Coronavirus, but we know for sure College and University students can get sick. Even if schools stay open higher education needs to close ASAP, those are adults who can take care of themselves. As for schools, i know it's controversial but how many meals will they be getting when all the staff get infected and need to self isolate, it's just kicking the can down the road and putting whole families in danger.

Maybe it's Nature's way of weeding out the weak...
