Not at all...

It's all what you make of it I think. Early on I had several comments directed at me that were purely just hate comments. I chose to ignore them or kill with kindness so to speak. The high road has earned me a very low margin of trolling, but it takes self discipline and not everyone is good at that. To use the other example given here by rorypig, productiveduck made lots of good memes, stayed on the leaderboard consistently, and did a lot of things that even Raydog did that made him very successful. However, I also saw many memes by PD that were reaching out for help, talking about hate comments and trolls, and it was evident that they didnt deal with that well. I tried to leave positive comments and reinforce them as much as possible. The best defense against trolls is a thick skin and self confidence, I've always felt that and still believe it.

I'd say harassment is just kind of just like swarming someone or like stalking them just to pick on them. And no, I do not think that Imgflip does a very good job of containing it, but the flippers aren't putting in their share. For example, ProductiveDuck could have just blocked ArfArf and Dialupdude and that would have been the end of that. But also, MODs weren't using the delete button or whatever they have to stop bullying. I think the experience of users is based on how they make it for themselves, but it's really the harassers job to shut up once and awhile.

I agree with pretty much all of this! “Harassment“ to me is not mild criticism (which folks should be able to handle), but it is ongoing, baseless, and/or overly harshly-worded criticism.

The “block” feature was great to implement! And we should remind Flippers it exists.

Yes, trolls should just shut up sometimes and more shame should be piled on harassers. Just because they can get away with it sometimes because it slips the MODs’ attention, or the MODs made the wrong call, doesn’t excuse their responsibility to communicate respectfully.

Politics is a bit different — sharp disagreements about important issues and politicians are to be expected.

But even in that context, I see little reason to hurl insults at other ImgFlippers that go much farther beyond “you’re being dumb/an idiot/clueless.” Or whatever.
