Actually reasoning is part a point out flaws in argumentation and how patterns of though are not valid arguments falls under factually provable concepts also know as facts. As such they would have not failed to do either.
On point is something called the Wrong Means Fallacy, in which the use of a fallacy is used as evidence that someone is wrong. Making errors in reasoning make you more likely to be wrong, but a right answer can come about from improper means. So just pointing out fallacies is not an actual counter argument.
