I think so. Biggest hole in the defense? No one else had the same motive and opportunity.
However, there was a lot of justified anger against the LAPD over the Rodney King beating that the defense team was able to exploit, and I think that informed the jury’s decision to acquit.
It’s worth nothing that an 11-month trial is really, really, really, really long trial, even for a murder trial. Most trials are over in a week or less.
Not sure exactly why this one dragged out so long. I haven’t studied it fully, I was too young at the time to have been exposed to the media circus around it, and obviously I wasn’t on the jury. I did watch the Netflix series ”The People v. O.J. Simpson” which was a pretty damning portrayal of O.J.
The fact we are still talking about this is a reminder that life involves an uncomfortable amount of uncertainty. And our justice system, though the best in the world, doesn’t produce perfect results, even under the most high-profile of circumstances.
Further, the concept of “innocent until proven guilty” only gets you so far. Regardless of the exact judicial outcome, when there’s reason to suspect someone did a crime... well, then there’s reason to suspect it.
Of note, O.J. was found responsible for these murders later in a civil trial. The civil trial lasted 4 months and featured 101 witnesses, which is also an absurdly long time for a trial and a monstrous amount of evidence.
Of note, civil trials have lower standards of proof. “Preponderance of the evidence” (50.1%) rather than “beyond a reasonable doubt” which is needed to return a criminal conviction.
