My personal stance on hate speech: I pretty much only flag death threats, and with lower-level hate speech I choose instead to just exercise my own free speech rights to “call it out”
In that hate-driven Kylie stream above, I flexed my own personal code and flagged a meme that was a personal attack on me and had garnered plenty of upvotes. It appears that report was denied by the local MODs, and I don’t really care enough to elevate that complaint
(Analogous counter-trolling and even positive content by me was rapidly unfeatured, however — a hypocritical stance that caused me to leave that stream)
Unfortunately, the global MODs don’t do a great job with content control on this site. And at this point, I figure it would just be too burdensome to involve them. ImgFlip would have to employ someone full-time just to watch my account.
I’d rather the global MODs spend their limited resources helping out the folks here that might have real self-esteem issues and would be at risk of leaving the site or self-harming if targeted by hate.
The best protection you can ever have from online trolls is a positive attitude, a thick skin, and a robust belief in your own values.
