I agree with most of the people here. Technology isn't always the problem but in how and when it's used. When we replace personal connections and want to view others more through a phone screen then eye to eye that's where the problems start. Great question! Now back to eating cardboard ;)

Thanks, I tried to bring some thought back into the stream with this one!

Well, it depends.
If you think about it, your grammar/vocabulary only suffers if you let it suffer, or if you dont bother to learn in general. If you do want to keep it up, then your grammar with be nurtured enough so that way you'll still have it at a good enough standard.

So, you should blame the people who arent teaching grammar and spelling as well as they should be, in my opinion.

Well, I kinda blame the people who just don't care to learn more than the people who probably tried to teach them but at a certain point just had to give up... afterall, you're usually not allowed to actually torture people until they get it right... šŸ™ˆ

Wait....*looks at all the people Ive tortoured* Youre uh...not...allowed to do that....?!

And well, thats true too...but, stupid people have been around since before smartphones and the internet. The people who dont want to learn, even if they are being teached were around since before then and now, so you cant blame it on internet communications....

Yeah, I was as shocked as you when I found out last week...

I'm not blaming technology or the internet. The only bad thing about all this technology might be that it's too easy to use. People already use all of these things, especially social media, before they know enough about all the consequences it can have. I just think handling modern technology should be taught in school as well.

I just feel like since online it doesn't seem to matter anymore if you use correct grammar and spelling (and most devices can actually check your spelling and people still decide not to use it!) people are also less willing to learn. I used to think language was this set of rules on how to speak and write and you're just supposed to learn those rules so you can communicate with others... But more and more I'm seeing these "rules" change because people have been using something wrong long enough that now it's the new rule. The language "rules" I had grown up with are just describing the use of the language afterall and can change over time. And usually those changes are not because the new rule is better or makes more sense but because enough people kept not following the old rules. I've had some serious crises and depressive episodes about this... I just wish some smart people made and kept the rules of a language and you could just ignore people who don't use it correctly. šŸ™ˆ

I work in a professional setting where grammar is actually very important. There is a stark difference between those who are older and have picked up technology as it develops and those that are younger and grew up communicating that way. One of my brightest rising stars in the company is 22 years old and he knows what to say and how to say it, but when he tries to type it out it just makes no sense sometimes.

*would, not with. And there are a couple punctuation errors here and there but sometimes that's subjective. Missing apostrophe in "aren't" for instance.

I wouldn't want you to go on looking uneducated now would I? ;)

Don't feel bad, I make those errors in haste all the time.

I think it's pretty amazing that we can communicate with people from all over the world. While I haven't met anyone on imgflip IRL, I do consider some of you to be real friends. For that reason I can appreciate the benefits that social media has to offer. Still.

While, I don't think the problem lies with social media/technology itself but with how people use it. Instead of using it as a platform to interact with other people on a social level, people seem to be using it as a means of obtaining self validation in the form of likes, followers, upvotes etc.

It should never be treated as a substitute for real life conversation, as it too often is. I've often seen a group of friends or even couples too engrossed in their phones to even look up for a minute to have a real life conversation with the people sitting in front of them.

While I'm not a fan of internet slang in general, I think it's acceptable to use on social media, but when it starts to creep it's way into how people speak IRL, That's a problem. To put it lightly it makes people sound unintelligent.
2 ups, 4y
Lol :)

I agree, the type of communication in question should never be a substitute for real life interactions. I do feel that there are some out there that have developed social anxiety because they haven't been exposed to enough personal contact with actual human beings. I say that as an introvert myself, but believe it wholeheartedly.

sure, it allows me to instantaneously communicate with my sisters who live in two completely different states from me and each other... but nothing can compare to getting to talk to them face to face, y'know? not even Facetime
1 up, 4y
Yes you are right on being more personal face to face, there is no exchanging that for any smart phone app.

Everything I've read while studying Elementary Education seems to indicate that textspeak improves language skills. It's like sarcasm; it's harder to understand so it makes your brain go through extra steps. Also, it encourages more communication, and therefore more practice.

Actually my Boomer mother's use of textspeak is what makes me flip tables. It's like she went to the Shakespearean school of 4th-Dimensional acronyms. Tysm for the Hellraiser puzzle box of texts, madre. Smh.

Social media is like an engine of misinformation and empty one-upmanship tho. HARD PASS. (Imgflip doesn't count imo)
