Kylie M. was the most famous cog, but still just a cog, in the wheel of this particular Tourism Australia ad campaign.
That said, Ms. Minogue personally did inevitably catch some of the blowback from what some Australians felt was a poorly-timed and off-color, stereotyped ad campaign.
It’s worth noting, though, that tourism is a major sector of Australia’s economy that desperately needs help right now. And though this ad campaign may not have struck the right tone, it’s hard to overly criticize Tourism Australia for just trying to do its job.
For what it’s worth, Ms. Minogue and her family donated $500,000 to bushfire relief charities, and she’s also been spotted at bushfire relief galas.

A complicated subject and emotions in Australia are obviously running high right now — but I do feel a lot of this outrage would be more productively directed toward those truly responsible for the fires. From the alleged “arsonists” cited by NSW police all the way up to the global warming-denying Australian PM Scott Morrison and his counterparts on the world stage.
