There is no doubt that Lincoln's use of government authority was contrary to the convictions of today's Republicans, and that opposition to slavery was fundamentally a liberal, progressive issue. During the time of the Civil war, the south was made up of "Conservative" Democrats. William Tappan Thompson ( Democrat) created the Confederate Flag. Robert E Lee himself was a "Conservative" Democrat. The Democratic Party remained the Conservative Party until the 1960's.

BLAH BLAH BLAH. the FACT remains that Lincoln was a Republican and freed the black man and the slave holders were Democrats and Democrats are still trying to keep the black man on the plantation, dependent on...you guessed it, DEMOCRATS.

And the uncomforable truth is that the Democrat Party of the 1850's through the late 1950's & early 1960's were the party of slavery and later, Jim Crow. Furthermore, the Democrats were the founders of the KKK, and nothing you say will abrogate those facts.

I wasn't comparing modern-day blacks to slaves...I was comparing modern-day(and yesteryear) Democrats to slave-holders

Lincoln was a Liberal, in a Liberal party of the day. The GOP was founded in 1854 by opponents of the Kansas–Nebraska Act, which allowed for the potential expansion of slavery into certain U.S. territories. The party supported classical liberalism, opposed the expansion of slavery, and supported economic reform.

Lincoln was a liberal. In common parlance, a liberal is one seeking to change the status quo while a conservative is one seeking to preserve it. Lincoln was very much seeking to change American society to more closely match its founding ideals.
