Because in their twisted mind, they know they can get attention because of it.

That reason did cross my mind, as well, although I wonder.....

Because they might want to get away from their past and start afresh?

Is that what "faking death" means?

Because they need the attention.
Most people are self-loathing and need other people to fill that void.
So people fake their own deaths because people only care about other people if they are dead.

Or so somebody that has wronged them can feel guilty.

Cuz people don't really think things through when they do things.

Death insurance.

the people who fake their death and change their identity afterwards do it to get away from their past life, while the ones who fake their death and keep their identity afterwards do it for attention
