Officers Koon and Powell were found guilty in a Federal Court of violating Rodney King's Civil Rights by excessively beating him with batons. They could have received 10-years in prison. The judge showed them the kind of mercy all humans deserve. They had made a mistake. Their training and rules of conduct did not support the excessive anger driven beating they meted out. They were highly paid public servants, who were expected to rise above impulsive behavior. The judge noted that their lives had been changed forever by their unprofessional behavior. He also noted that Rodney King's behavior contributed to their unprofessional responses, in that he acted provocatively, once the CHP officers relinquished control of the situation to the LAPD and holstered their weapons. These former LAPD Officers were sentenced to 2 1/2 years in prison.
There seems to be a pattern, pertaining to people who "beat the rap," in one venue. These LAPD officers got away with criminal behavior in the Simi Trial. O.J. Simpson was found Not Guilty. Eventually, justice was done, if even indirectly. Moscow Mitch may deliver the goods in the current trial of Donald J. Trump. One day we will have all the evidence, and there will be no mistake that justice was/is being miscarried. The Republicans in the Senate want the evidence to show the president is not guilty. If they don't have to see more evidence, proving otherwise, their desired verdict will stand. One day, we will have the facts. I suspect they won't matter to a great many people. Sometimes it is hard to be proud of my country. Maybe we were naive to believe that, "Right matters here."
