Thanks and yeah I realize that... I’m white too, and I obviously don’t feel that way either. I have read Ta-Nehisi Coates, and I do support race-based reparations in theory, although I have no idea how to get it done in a way that won’t be immensely controversial.

However: I used to think slavery/Jim Crow was so long ago that blacks should “just get over it.” And I’m reckoning with that. I know plenty of other whites hold the same mindset I used to have. Indeed, some of them are right here on this site.

It’s an inherent limitation of political memes that, in the interests of simplicity, creators inevitably have to make certain label choices that are bound to be inaccurate to some degree.

But I stand by this: The overall posture of white America, even accounting for relatively race-conscious folks like you and me, has been one of disregard and downplaying the horrible shit blacks in our country have had to go through.
