True, though most have at best of our current population. Of that said population we have over a third that is elderly or near it. The costs of prescriptions alone will dwarf the amount of taxes to offset that in our current system of health care.
In addition, a tax toward that system will truly bring about a "Why should I pay for my neighbor mentality", in that, they live unhealthy so why pay for their choices? In the USA, we are, as a nation, one of the unhealthiest in the world. So, forget Republicans vs Democrat in the future and hello to the health police. Granted, an exaggeration. Just saying the possibility

I agree with you on the point of the cost of medication should be lower. In a capalist system, which Republicans profess to adhere to, there should be competition from not only inside the US, but outside. Comparable to the reason cell phones, Tv's, and other products are.
However, each medication should be vetted by the FDA before being allowed for introducing it in the US. Here lies the rub. Pharmaceutical companies consistently lobby politicians of both sides to ensure their monopoly.
That said, my assertion that where "universal" healthcare works in other countries, it cannot work here. Unless you believe it will work? In that case, please enlighten me
