This was a great book. To be honest, I put it down and never picked it back up after the Civil War chapters, lol. From what I recall, his presidency was not as much of a success.
He had an amazing origin story. He rose from basically nothing -- kicked out of the Army on suspicions of drunkenness, then a failed farmer, then a mediocre shopkeeper -- to quickly rising to General of the entire Union forces. And after the war ended in Union victory, he was universally celebrated, levels of respect and fawning admiration from the American public not attained by anyone since Washington.
I might have to pick this book back up.
