That a legitimate reason for abortion is that there are more kids being born than parents hoping to adopt. If that was true then why did I have to wait a year to be matched with our daughter?

Also, that a birthmother "gave up their child". To give up is defeat, and that implies that the mother couldn't care less about the child, whereas in fact the act of placing a child for adoption is one of the most selfless and loving acts of care for a child a mother could possibly have.

Great meme Kate.

Oh man, a year? I would be so happy if that was our story!

Great points though. Especially the second one! Oh man, that hit some strong feels.

So what's your story? I'd love to hear it! I'm picking up that you are an adoption advocate, welcome to the stream :)

Thanks for the welcome! Yeah, I just joined the stream (didn't even know it existed until I bumped into our friend Kate_the_Grate in the politics stream).

So my story is really simple I guess, just wanted to adopt since I was young. When I was in elementary school, I had a best friend whose sister was adopted, which was a real softball introduction to it. As a kid, I got to see from her perspective so I already knew it was great. Then a middle school teacher made us read "They Cage the Animals at Night." Reading his story about jumping from home to home without parents just broke my heart and I decided then I would adopt when I got older. In fact, it was a huge make it or break it moment when my wife and I were dating. I basically told her it was a dealbreaker. She has to be open to adoption. Luckily for me, she was like 110% on board right away. We have two little boys of our own but we have been working the past two years on adding one more to the family. It has been a crazy long process and we finally decided to try our luck elsewhere. We took some jobs in China and moved here about a half a year ago to save more money and try our luck both there and back home.

But yeah, I am a big believer that kids are a blessing and need to be cherished. What about you sir, tell me your story! :)

Yep Kate is a good un' :)

My wife and I tried to conceive for about two years before we realized we just were not meant to naturally. After getting checked out we found that both of us have issues with infertility, so the chances of us ever being able to get pregnant are very slim. We considered IVF but couldn't morally justify it.

To shorten a long story, I heard God speak to me one night and told me to save someone's life. I dont know if you are a believer or not, but I fully believe we were called to adopt a child, and that's exactly what we did. Our little girl is 3 now, and I cant imagine our life without her! And I know she was saved from a life that no one should have to live.

We actually tried to adopt her little brother about a year ago, little more maybe, and the circumstances were such that we weren't able to unfortunately, but we hope to adopt again.

Thanks for sharing your story, that's incredible that you actually moved to China to facilitate the process! I commend your dedication, that's awesome. I hope you aren't in a place where that virus is spreading...sounds terrible. I've heard wonderful things about chinese adoptions, I'm sure you will be very blessed by your actions. It's extremely rewarding, and I think it's great that you are adopting even though you are able to conceive children yourselves. I pray you are blessed soon with another little one! Again, welcome to the stream, it's gotten off to a slow start but i think this is a great place for like minds to converge and others to learn about adoption. Let me know if theres anything I can do or pray for in your journey friend.

Cheers ;)

Great to see a fellow believer! I actually completely know what you mean. The Bible is seasoned with so much adoption language and it simply can't be ignored. My favorite is in the book of James. Basically he says "you call yourself Christian? Show me the widows and orphans you are taking care of." I love the book so much it became my first son's name.

But yeah, glad to be added on the stream, slow start or not, it is always nice to meet like minded people!

And as for the virus, we are fortunately in a place that has not taken any major impact yet. While that can change, our prayers are with the folks in Wuhan that has been completely quarantined. Imagine living in a city of 10 million people and then being told you can't leave. Don't get me wrong, I understand why they are doing it, but it doesn't change how scary it must be.

Thanks for sharing your story, and I look forward to the day I can also share some good news as well!

I was just going back through some old comments, curious as to whether or not you were able to find success in your adoption? Take care.

Not yet… still in China and have to save up some more money… we have a friend helping us now though! He’s adopted three so I am hoping they can help us cut through the tape. The pandemic threw everything cross for us so we are trying!

I’d like to dispel that it’s always from orphanages. That’s not how it is most of the time.
