The man is highly allergic to plant growth in the field and it suffocated him. The package is just something he was carrying and has no implication to the puzzle.

The wind from a coming monsoon rocked the helicopter carrying the fallen from a battlefield in Vietnam. This particular soldier's body fell out of the helicopter, as well as the unopened bag which contains his dog tag and other personal belongings.
