New Year's Day 1980 marked the beginning of the eighties. After all, they are called “the eighties” and not “the eighty-ones,” right?

The 80s are not necessarily the 180th decade. But, by definition, a decade is a period of 10 years so you could say 2003 to 2012 is a decade. I agree that 2020 Is the beginning of a new decade, just not the 202nd decade since the year 1BC.
