The woes of English grammar (in my own native language (Dutch) this pun wouldn't work).

Correct. But it's not a matter of grammar but words having more than one meaning.

Yeah, in this case half correct, as grammar turns "leave" into "left" in the context of this sentence, and that creates the funny effect. But it was indeed also creating the same word with a different meaning, and in my last picture both "left" and "right" have been used twice, and both in a different meaning...

Now I don't know if the one who configured that matrix board thought about his own grammar or if he was really confusing left and right, as in the former case change of grammar could have prevented confusion, as that would lead to a different word choice. "Left lanes are closed, use the remaining lanes" or "Left lanes are closed, use the lanes on the right"... Then again, as a novel writer myself (although I write in Dutch, I guess that was obvious), I notice that it's always a kind of discussion what is grammar or just writing style or spelling or whatever...

Anyway, you did get the game I was playing, and that was what mattered. 10 points for you.

Actually absolutely correct, because "leave" was not mentioned at all, and grammar does not change "leave" to "left". There is an infinitive "to leave" and the simple verb tense forms are "left" and....."left". But then it depends whether (you as) the speaker meant "the right one is 'left'" as "remaining" or "exited". Either can be correctly inferred, but the speaker has the final say as to what they actually meant.

Yeah, like I said, it's always a matter of personal interpretation, as some linguists I met would come up with a different explanation to get to the same usage of language... If linguists can't come to an agreement, I don't see much point to discuss it any further... But in the end, you got my joke....
Another language play which took me years to decipher came from the band Babylon Zoo: "Spaceman! I always wanted you to go into space, man!" If you write it out you can see the joke, but if you hear it in the song, it's confusing. And I like such plays on language, whether it be grammar or other parts of a language.
