while the rhetoric and talking points have that "feel-good" American sensibility to it,the actual underlying facts are pretty non-controversial.
the majority of able bodied adults only use food stamps for an average of 6 mos.having one thing less to worry about as you try to crawl your way out of the hole appears to have some positive results.
piling on more shame and indignity is counter-productive,and is actually a fantastic deterrent for able bodied adults (usually male) to even apply.
maybe that was the goal all along? unknown, pure speculation.
but here is a comparison that I find so illuminating how deep the divide has become in our country.
trumps new food stamp plan will strike 700,000 from the food stamp rolls and save the American taxpayer 5.5 billion over 5 years.
that's around 1 billion a year,not a bad chunk of change.
compare that to the current presidential campaigns, which are projected to spend over 9 billion.
simply to run for a position that pays 400k a year.
notice anything? like maybe a grotesque disparity?
how the poor, vulnerable, marginalized and disposed are demonized, dismissed and vilified in our country is absolutely reprehensible.
while I witness billionaires play the victim.cry and whine and stamp their feet in an over-privileged tantrum.
I also witness the very same media portray with disgust and revulsion the least of us,the most vulnerable, and blame them for their situation.
and there is never..NEVER.. a discussion about how the system has become so thoroughly broken and dysfunctional.
it is simply never even mentioned.
and it is a moral failure of our political class.
jesus wept.....
