Demanding Obama’s birth certificate and making fun of Trump’s hair are in totally different categories of disrespect. It’s not a whataboutism to oppose birtherism at the same time you’re saying Trump wears a wig. The phrase originated as a way to describe Putin’s tendency to talk about the U.S. when asked to answer for Russia’s human rights record.

I asked you guys to explain or justify Trump’s birtherism and a lot of you responded with, “but you made fun of Trump’s hair.” That’s a whataboutism. And you compounded the error by saying that I was being a whataboutist.
