“Stop disrespecting our president!”

Actually, the initial birther claim was started by the Hillary campaign in the 2008 primaries (vs Obama), and it was not that Obama wasn't a citizen, but that he was not a NATURAL-BORN citizen (which is Constitutionally mandated). Trump did not 'literally claim Obama was not a citizen', but (in ~2011-2012) did question why Obama was preventing release of the long-form birth certificate, since it would dispel the whole 'birther movement'. It was not really very disrespectful -- certainly not remotely compared to what's happened since 11/9/2016.... Trump was attacked for even questioning (and of course, Trump fought back as he does) and, in any case, it was 'successful' since Obama finally did release it. Trump did not start the birther thing, although he did claim that Obama was 'milking it out' to perpetuate it (in a shrewd political move).

That's a whataboutism.
