I think it's because accent is learned. When you're learning how to sing, you're basically learning how to speak all over again. I saw this one Filipino man go from speaking with a heavy accent to dropping the accent entirely when he sang.

Then why do Spanish singers sound Spanish?

Brit punk Singers usually would have sang in their accents but outside of that most Brits would be hard to place, it's the same with a lot of Irish.
Maybe it has something to do with how they learn to sing. Honestly, I don't really know.
I've listened to a lot of singer's from different European Countries and it would be hard to place where most of them come from but then with others it's quite obvious.
One thing I can say is that, if Imelda May sang in her original Dublin accent she probably wouldn't be quite the star she is today. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ maybe she and other singers made a conscious decision not to. who knows? Not me ;) a

Irish & Brits watch a whole lotta American movies and tv, as well as listen to our music. So it's easier for them to emulate. It's been said singing flattens accents, "But when IIIIIIIIIrish Eyes are smiling" says otherwise. Heck, even American pop 45s from back in the early days had a different accent than today. Also Country singers has no problem retaining their accent, albiet somewhat flattened with superstars going for crossover appeal.

The song subjects also. Since when do Brits use dollars? Unless one wants to sound like a real Manch Indie Rocker, you'd sooner hear lyrics about NYC than Manchester or London.

Because singing is basically slow speaking and you can't detect the accent as much. I was able to learn quite a bit of Polish through song because the words were much easier to work through in slow motion, lol

Anyway, when you’re singing, accents tend not to show through. One example is Ellie Goulding, who has a thick British accent, but when she sings, she sounds like she’s from America. Freddie Mercury is another good example.

I actually think Goulding sounds like a Brit when she sings. At least from her old stuff. I'm not a fan of hers so I can't speak for what she does now ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Then again, Shane MacGowan doesn't have any teeth left in his face, so that might be the reason why.
