The Republicans aren't fascists, but they are far-right. Democrats aren't conservatives, but most of them are just liberal at most, left-leaning at minimum. There are very little far-left Democrats, from the looks of it.

And no real left party in America? What about the Green Party, the Peace and Freedom Party, or the Socialist Party? Are those not left?

Also, I don't think all Republicans are far-right. I think it can vary, much like what you say with the democrats.

For me, a Briton, I do think left and right exist, but neither is better than the other in their extreme forms.

Two-sided philosophies aren't gonna get us anywhere.
And I agree with how you say that there are "those who wish to control their fellow human beings and those who want to be left to pursue their life, liberty, and happiness on their own with like-minded individuals." but the conservative right doesn't always provide this either. Freedom isn't a right-wing exclusive thing. Liberty isn't a Trump Special. The Democrats play dirtier than the Republicans, but the Republicans aren't immune to playing dirty.
Ultimately, it matters on what you're told. The Democrats have become oligarchic, the Republicans are very much populist.

There isn't any left and right, there's authoritarian vs. libertarian.
