To teach humans the conquences of sin

What OM said, only less "abbreviated"

God wants a relationship with us. He gave us free will so that it is actually a relationship, and we are not forced to love him, we do it of our own will. That same free will opens us up to sin, and just as we can freely love God, we can (and do) freely sin.

A better question is, why would God create ticks...knowing that they would be so nasty and creepy and otherwise just eww. lol

Reminds me of an exchange my 4 year old and I had.
Me: God made everything and he only makes things for good.

My 4 year old: them why did God make mosquitos?

Mosquitoes are pollinators, they do not kill. While the females sucking blood may transmit disease, that is unintentional.

Compare that to how many creatures die with every step we take, the homes we fumigate, the ground we sterilize with herbicides and pesticides...

Add on top of that the depletion of the soil through intense agriculture (with or without pesticides), massive deforestation (rainforests are not that much destroyed due to their importance to the environment. Other forests, on the other hand, are treated mercilessly), oil spills and industrial farming (which treats animals in such a way that if humans were treated that way, it would be considered far beyond regular cruelty and slavery, and far beyond any of the war crimes from the previous century) and you'll see humanity under a very different light.

Most arable land averages 500 years before total depletion/degradation.... even in the US Midwest where the rich loess topsoil can be as deep as 20 feet instead of inches like elsewhere, the tonnage that runs off is immense... Plus fertilizer runoff creating deadzones in oceans devoid of oxygen, causing toxic red algae tides, death of coral...

A vast amount of rainforests in the Amazon were being burned in recent months... in Indonesia the skies were choking in clouds of orange from the burning of theirs to grow palms for palm oil - a so-called green renewable energy source...

Canadian forests are being logged at unbelievable rates, also great swaths of land there being turned into lifeless wasteland in the quest for shale oil...

I once got in an argument with 2 'save thu world' types smoking cigs at a table at my college with signs decrying hunting deer. I asked them if they knew how many creatures died just so they can look cool smoking. I had met them before with a group trying to start an enviromental action club. Bunch of fakers, only me and the guy whose idea it was were coming up with proposals for us to actually do something while the rest patted themselves on the back just for showing up. Needless to say, that was the only meeting and the club never materialized.

When God created everything, it was all good. So, I think they weren't the same ticks we know now.

I'm still gonna ask him why when I get to heaven...lol :)

No of course not, but if someone I love didn't love me back I would eventually turn my back on them. There are many descriptions of hell, one of the more popular ideologies (the catholic one, kate correct me if I'm wrong) is that hell is not a big bbq pit with demons and pitchforks, but rather complete absence from God. The definition is "self exclusion from God and the blessed", meaning we choose that fate, God does not command it.

I do see your point, and it is one that many struggle with. Why does a good God do bad things or allow bad to happen? Even many Christians struggle with that concept. Can you cite an instance where Gods punishment was not justified? And how can we say He was unjustified if us human beings cannot comprehend an eternal, all powerful, immaterial being's nature? In my faith, I trust that God is sovereign over all things, good and bad as we perceive them.

As far as the relationship, I'll say for myself that I ask sometimes daily why He wants anything to do with little old me and why he puts up with my crap...why do I deserve His grace? I've heard God speak directly to me twice, audibly and directly, and one of those times at a very low and humbling point in my life I asked Him that question...why give me your grace, and He said "it's alright son, I've got plenty". Call me crazy, it happened. So why does He want a relationship with me? I have no idea, but I'm glad He does.

I'm curious, how many Christian's have you had this exact conversation with?! I like it, you're forcing me to think about the tough stuff. We should never grow so comfortable in our beliefs that we never step back and think about why we feel the way we do :)

Except it was the other God that gifted humanity that. This one had a hissy fit, cast him and their pet monkey people out of Eden, and the world has been ruled by evil ever since.
Thing is, that's EXACTLY what the story says, albeit dropping the God part out of the Serpent. He was the good God. The other is, as the good book says, a jealous and wrathful God.

Well, more than 2 - "In our image." Just 2 in that scene.

So you're a Buddhist or some other polytheistic belief?

Buddhists are non-theistic (although in practice...), and certainly not polytheistic.

"we shall create them In our image" doesn't sound familiar?

Wouldn't that indicate a trinitarian God?
0 ups, 5y
No, because it was not only written thousands of years prior to Christianity claiming it says that when it clearly does not, the story itself was borrowed by Judaism from polytheistic religions.
