The smell of concrete is very calming to me for some strange reason. I think it has to do with where I grew up in Honduras.

Hm. Interesting.

I can't think of a personal example, but I have a friend who is disgusted by pancakes and the smell of them, because he vomited them when he was young. In his words: "Whenever I walk next to Goti's (local pancake grill), first I go behind it, vomit intensely, flip the bird to the people working there and then walk away."

HE probably got sick shortly after eating pancakes as a child. Same reason maple smell makes me ill. I got sick on maple candy in Canada as a child and now my brain says that it is poison. Thank evolution.

Yes, that's the reason he vomited the pancakes. He pretty much told us that himself.

I've had a similar experience with homemade patties. Ate at least seven of them. All went through the throat in the wrong direction. I can stand the smell, but I haven't eaten them since.

It's an interesting topic, scent is the strongest sense when considering memory recall.

Certain perfumes remind me of different times in my life, many I don't even know the names but they take me back to when I was first dating my wife, or the smell of my grandmother's perfume that she always wears reminds me of her. When my other grandmother passed, we were going through all the things in her house and i found an old bottle of hair tonic, I opened it and I swear it was like my grandfather who passed many years prior was standing right there with us. I never even knew that was what his "scent" was derived from and never even really bothered to care until that moment. I kept the bottle and still have it to this day, just for memories.

And then there's the smell of airbag accelerant, which immediately takes me back to a bad car accident I was in. I get uneasy any time I smell that, which thankfully isn't often, only once since the accident and that has been 15 years ago.

Is it a past scent or music that creates the strongest most detailed memory recall? IDK

I read/heard somewhere that more areas of the brain light up when music is played & even when dementia patients with Alzheimer's forget so much they can remember and sing songs they learned long ago.

That said, I agree scents can evoke memories.

I dont know, interesting thought. I could see music making the longest lasting memories, as my grandmother who had dementia would tap her fingers and hum old songs and hymns even as the rest of her memories faded away. I think scent recalls the most strong and vivid memories though.

I associate the smell of fish with fun memories at the Sponge Docks. Hence, I now love the smell.
