The game we know in America as football gets its roots from Australian rules football which is sort of like rugby and allowed the use of hands in some situations.
Over the years the rules changed to utilize more of the use of hands and less kicking until it evolved into the game that we know in America as football.
Everywhere else in the world it's known as American Football.

Actually Europeans usually refer to our football as "gridiron football". I lived in Europe in the 80s when the game was starting to get a following there.
