Roman slavery was already on the decline by the time they converted to Christianity and 3 of those popes you are blaming for slavery were former slaves themselves. Roman slaves also had legal means of obtaining their own freedom or taking their masters to court for terrible treatment. Romans who killed their slaves later on in the empire could also be charged with homicide.

But yes, they did practice slavery on a larger scale than it was practiced in america, largely because roman slavery was based largely on slaves taken in conquests or as punishment for crimes and they didn't discriminate based on color or ethnicity. Just about anyone could become a roman slave under certain circumstances.
