American troops do not have to be physically stationed in Saudi Arabia to effectively defend them. I suspect they are there as a statement, and a target. If they are attacked, it can be used as an excuse to start a war against Iran.

Yeah, no. Being present in the region is a prerequisite to defending that region. Air support requires an air base, ground support requires the troops be stationed within a reasonable driving distance, and no sane person would consider missiles an option to defend an oil field.

All the usual suspects have checked in with their requisite defenses of another indefensible act by their leader.
