My brother in Law has decided to stay put in Florida. You can hit the ocean with a good throw from his place.

Steve Harvey Meme | IT'S A HARD CALL | image tagged in memes, steve harvey | made w/ Imgflip meme maker
I hope your brother in law is going to be safe. When Harvey went through Houston everyone (outside the city) was giving the governor balk for not evacuating but the truth is sometimes it costs more lives money and effort to evacuate than to stay put. The last big hurricane Houston had mandatory evacuation 100 people died from being stranded in 110 degree weather in cars that had run out of gas on the biggest highway leading out of the city. I think maybe there were 5 deaths total from The Harvey flooding.

Had a tornado shatter every window in our car in Michigan. Had to drive back to Florida that way. (This was long before curbside window replacement)

Towards the bottom. But bad weather strikes everywhere. Been through several hurricanes when I lived in Florida including once while out in the gulf on a small cabin cruiser.

Lived through blizzards, lightening strikes and even an earthquake where I live in New England.

We left Seattle (my hometown) because of the earthquakes. My mother couldn’t stand it.

So pick a spot and sooner or later the weather will come for you.

True. I fortutnley have never experienced a tornado but 2 years ago we had 82 mph winds

ALWAYS listen to the call. They're not asking you to leave for their health, but to save your life.

So let's say you stay, because you don't feel like leaving, it's the home of your family for four generations, etc.

If you die, they'll have to spend time looking for you and when they find you, you're putting them though a traumatic experience of seeing you not just dead, but possibly mutilated, decaying, etc. Do you really want them to have that unpleasant experience that might haunt them for the rest of their lives? And then possibly seeing their loved ones screaming and weeping? Maybe they'll even blame themselves because of "What if's". "What if I didn't bother to drink one more bottle, they could have been saved?" What if I had done this better or that.

Do you reallyt want to put them in that position?

Personally we have only once been told to prepare for evacuation that was called off as the hurricane weakened and I was a child then. But yes I agree. Materialistic items can always be replaced, life cannot.
