I've heard that the secert to having a lasting marriage, is to go for your best friend. Of course, being "Friend Zone"d is a possibility, but in choosing a friend he already knows you well in terms of strengths and weaknesses.
If not, and you want to date your crush, befriend him first. Get to know him before deciding whether you want him or not. If he's not ideal, it doesn't hurt to have another friend.
