The last 3 gifs that have been top have managed over 60,000 views and the top memes have been around 45,000-50,000 but with more upvotes.
Something must have changed in the way gifs register views, maybe as they play automatically?
Well the gifs are short and funny and you can just record a video and not have to take multiple pictures for one thing. And like @LordCheesus (love the btw) pointed out, they play automatically, so that gives them an extra bonus. But I like memes better because you can print a meme but not a gif. But you can send someone a gif and not have to record the gif. Just send it to them like a normal meme.

IT has nothing to do with the phone, and more to do with the movement of the gif. They bug my eyes. I have always filtered gifs out unless I wanted to see them. Now that we can't when there is a gif on a page the thing goes full screen. I keep looking through settings to see if there is something I can change, but I have yet to find anything.
Gonna add, it is not an old black berry. The idea of Blackberry phones being old dysfunctional dinosaurs is popular, but they actually have a good product.
