Neither group today should be blamed for the past.

There is the small matter of it actually being the Romans who killed Jesus, and the Romans spent the next 1493 years throwing down crazy money to try to make up for that so...

Does anyone actually READ the Bible, other than John 3:16, that is?

Having gone to Catholic school, they preferred to read parts to us than have us read it ourselves.

Seems like almost every other Sunday Mass the sermon was the story of the Widow's Mite, we heard it so much. It was all about the "gimme gimme your money."

Yeah so they could tell you what the bible said but not what it actually said

Exactly.

Classmate of mine in HS became a Baptist, and started preaching. He would tell his friends to come with him, he'll show them what he was talking about in the Bible. No one wanted to hear it, but I did. I couldn't believe what was there that I had never heard before.

I finally read it cover to cover when I was fifteen and quickly realized that I'm not the target audience at all.

Had I read it myself at 15, I wouldn't get it at all. But I understand you think I'm a troglodyte.

The Bible doesn't always make full sense at that age.

I hardly read any. Which is what gets me, people who claim to be devout Christians have read far less than I have.

My pastor has literally been on that for the past couple of weeks. (And oops, those messages might've been for me! 😊)

I've been saved over 25 years... I think I read it straight through once with my parents. I used to be obsessed with Revelation, though.

Wait, how were you not the target audience.

Crucifixion was a Roman execution, but Pilate pretty much wanted no part of it. Pharisees took the blame (along with their children and children's children) for the Romans.

None of that is in the text.

All except children's children (my fault, thought they took it up a generation) is from Matthew 27:24-26

24When Pilate saw that he was accomplishing nothing, but that instead a riot was breaking out, he took water and washed his hands before the crowd. “I am innocent of this man’s blood,” he said. “You bear the responsibility.”c

25All the people answered, “His blood be on us and on our children!”

26So Pilate released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged and handed Him over to be crucified.

It was still his decision to sentence Jesus despite having many, many reasons and opportunities to call it off. Records show that Roman magistrates were given wide administrative discretion in their tasks, and Pilate himself was eventually recalled to Rome for his harsh treatment of the Jews. That's saying something - when the Roman public opinion is that you've been a bit much with the oppression, it's not something that you can literally wash off.

The texts are very clear: Pilate found reasons why Jesus should have been cleared of charges over and over and over again, and yet he kept going bringing the case back to contention. Why put it to a crowd vote at all?

It's pretty clear that Pilate saw his job in this situation as securing a conviction on Jesus but spinning it as something that the people wanted and demanded. It was something he did in collaboration with the exact clergy that stirred the crowd up in the first place. The line about washing his hands was political showmanship. The Romans killed Jesus. Clear cut.
