I celebrated a half-dozen July 4ths while I lived in DC area. Never had to buy a VIP ticket for a good spot, only needed to show up early. I.e. make the effort and the sacrifice, and you're rewarded -- doesn't get more American than that!
It's a different world now I guess. Money and influence buy you your good spot now.
